I visited Kaji for the first time Saturday night. I'm a sushi fan and had heard good things, so I stopped in while visiting family while in Cedar Rapids.
The first thing I noticed was that Kaji is basically 1 big room. The hibachi/teppanyaki grills are right in the same area as the regular sushi tables, which are in between the sushi bar and regular bar. There's a private grill room with 2 grills in it, however, the overall layout definitely makes the place a little weird. Sushi restaurants are generally very intimate. They should not be drowned by the noise from the bar and grills.
Don't get me wrong, I think hibachi grills are a blast, and they should be fun and loud... but that should be separated from the regular sushi diners. I suggest putting up a wall or 2 to split this place up. I think it'd do a lot for the overall atmosphere.
Besides that though, we had sushi - a lot of sushi, and it was excellent. The fish was fresh, the octopus salad was great, and the spicy rolls were definitely spicy.
The bar was also good, they had good beer on tap and made a great martini.
And the last thing I have to take note of. We had 8:00 reservations, which meant it was pretty insane at first. Lots of people finishing up at the grills etc. But as soon as the crowds left and grills were shut off, it was freezing cold. I think the hoods may have been left on and sucking all the warm air out. Or maybe the thermostat is located right by the grill that was still on. Whatever it was, it should be fixed. It was like 50 degrees in there.
Overall, great food and drinks, they just have a couple atmosphere things to fix.

This is the premier restaurant to go to if you're into having an amazing time with friends you know well or if you want to introduce someone to the orgasmicness that is sushi - ask for lee.
